I wanted to write a party mix of all of it, those things that I love, in a story world where I and everyone else exists, because that’s the book I wanted to read as a teen but couldn’t find.
We can’t always understand the things that scare us, but scary stories are the safest places to experience our fears again and again, as many times as it takes for them to become comfortably familiar.
We should all want more for Black teen readers, and The Witchery grew out of that desire.
