Book Mail: Grief, magic, rap, necromancy, vampires, and more!

As I am writing this intro, I am at Book Donation Zero. This means that, while I have a towering TBR cart, everything I have read or ended up passing on reading (because I somehow can’t actually read all the book mail I get) has gone back out the door. Thanks to all of the generous publishers who send me books to share here on TLT. Those books, if not in my current TBR, are now at my school, making their way to Minnesota families through A Book of My Own, and helping stock a new library at a Minnesota youth shelter. Things are so grim these days. But we still have books. We still have wonderful people writing diverse and inclusive stories and all kinds of people working to connect readers with those books.

(S)Kin by Ibi Zoboi (ISBN-13: 9780062888877 Publisher: HarperCollins Publication date: 02/11/2025, Ages 14-18)
A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection!
From award-winning, New York Times bestselling author Ibi Zoboi comes her groundbreaking contemporary fantasy debut—a novel in verse based on Caribbean folklore—about the power of inherited magic and the price we must pay to live the life we yearn for.
“Our new home with its
thick walls and locked doors
wants me to stay trapped in my skin—
but I am fury and flame.”
Fifteen-year-old Marisol is the daughter of a soucouyant. Every new moon, she sheds her skin like the many women before her, shifting into a fireball witch who must fly into the night and slowly sip from the lives of others to sustain her own. But Brooklyn is no place for fireball witches with all its bright lights, shut windows, and bolt-locked doors.… While Marisol hoped they would leave their old traditions behind when they emigrated from the islands, she knows this will never happen while she remains ensnared by the one person who keeps her chained to her magical past—her mother.
Seventeen-year-old Genevieve is the daughter of a college professor and a newly minted older half sister of twins. Her worsening skin condition and the babies’ constant wailing keep her up at night, when she stares at the dark sky with a deep longing to inhale it all. She hopes to quench the hunger that gnaws at her, one that seems to reach for some memory of her estranged mother. When a new nanny arrives to help with the twins, a family secret connecting her to Marisol is revealed, and Gen begins to find answers to questions she hasn’t even thought to ask.
But the girls soon discover that the very skin keeping their flames locked beneath the surface may be more explosive to the relationships around them than any ancient magic.

Now the laughingstock of the school, Growls is sure he’ll never have another chance to date Tanisha. Even worse, Shanks has gone MIA, leaving him terribly alone.

But while doing research for a big school project, Freya discovers that Benjamin isn’t the big hero everyone has been taught to believe. He had some redeeming qualities, but he also held incredibly problematic views towards women, believing they shouldn’t have the right to vote—or even to exist outside of the home. Disappointed by her revelation, Freya wonders if she could figure out a way to not only show what the hometown hero was really like but replace his statue with one of an unsung hero: local suffragette Octavia Padgett.
Though Freya knows not everyone will agree with her, she is shocked when her efforts cause even bigger issues than she could have imagined. Even her own parents seem uneasy with Freya’s cause. With the help of her beloved Nan, friends new and old, and the coolest librarian she’s ever met, can Freya stand firm and tear down outdated views?

Octopus Moon by Bobbie Pyron (ISBN-13: 9780593616291 Publisher: Penguin Young Readers Group Publication date: 03/25/2025, Ages 10-13)
A deeply moving middle grade novel in verse about a girl struggling with depression when she starts fifth grade amidst a sea of changes.
Pearl loves watching the majestic loggerhead turtles and octopuses glide through the water at the aquarium. Pearl finds it especially easy to identify with the octopuses, who have millions of touch receptors all over their bodies. They feel everything. Sometimes, Pearl wishes she was more like a turtle, with a hard outer shell—it hurts too much to feel everything.
And the changes at the start of fifth grade don’t feel good to Pearl at all. New teachers, lockers, and being in different classes than her friends is unsettling. Pearl tries her best to pretend she’s fine, but she starts to struggle with things that used to come easy, like schoolwork, laughing and skateboarding with her best friend, Rosie, running and even sleeping.
After a disastrous parent-teacher conference, her parents decide to bring Pearl to Dr. Jill, who diagnoses her with depression. At first Pearl is resistant to Dr. Jill’s help; she doesn’t like feeling different, but she also doesn’t want to continue feeling so bad all the time. When Dr. Jill asks Pearl to try one Impossible Thing each day, like running, skateboarding, or walking her dog Tuck, she decides to try. For each impossible thing she attempts, Pearl puts a bead on a string. Bead by bead, and with the support of family and friends, Pearl finds her way back to herself. She discovers just like the moon is always there in the sky, even if it isn’t full, she’ll always be herself even when she doesn’t feel whole.
In this tender novel-in-verse, critically acclaimed author Bobbie Pyron draws from her own experiences to tell the story of a brave girl learning to take care of and love herself.

Mistress of Bones by Maria Z. Medina (ISBN-13: 9781250888235 Publisher: St. Martin’s Publishing Group Publication date: 08/05/2025, Ages 13-18)
An epic and romantic debut adventure fantasy, where a necromancer trying to resurrect her sister gets embroiled in bigger, world-ending plans instead
It’s been thousands of years since the gods lifted the continents into the air so humanity could thrive, chaining the lands down with their bones and turning them into Anchor.
Azul del Arroyo doesn’t care about gods or Anchor; she cares about being responsible for her sister’s death and getting her bones from the capital so she can bring her back to life. Again. But in her way stands the Emissary of the Lord Death, who will do anything in his power to stop her, because a necromancer like her shouldn’t exist—no matter how alluring.
As Azul and the Emissary’s cat-and-mouse game leads them to the dangerous Court of Cienpuentes, their fate becomes entwined with a count who begrudgingly works for a child king, a faceless witch who transforms Anchor into dreams she can peddle, and a long-lost half-brother with a secret of his own. It’s a time of enlightenment, of rapiers and scientific prowess, in a country where Anchor ceased to be something worth revering a long time ago, and people have forgotten the gods’ sacrifice.
But the gods haven’t. Because the gods want their bones back, and they’re not opposed to becoming players in their own game.
Swashbuckling, grand, and tragically romantic, Mistress of Bones is a can’t-miss debut about love, about loss, and, of course, about death.

With swirling rumors of a missing student and a rise in strange “animal attacks” near campus, Brennan must uncover the secrets of the clan and figure out how to balance vampirism and humanity, or risk losing the first real friends he’s ever had.
Filled with humor and heart, The Good Vampire’s Guide to Blood & Boyfriends has a gentle bite.

Go-Man: Champion of Earth by Hamish Steele (ISBN-13: 9781454955047 Publisher: Union Square Kids Publication date: 08/26/2025 Series: GO-MAN!, Ages 8-12)
Lonely latchkey kid Tobi dreams of growing up to fight the giant monsters that plague his city, just like his dad does, but when he stumbles upon the power to turn into the colossal superhero, Go-Man, he realizes he’s been wishing his childhood away.
Go-Man: Champion of Earth is an action-packed, highly bingeable middle grade adventure series about how one kid overcomes the differences that set him apart from his classmates in order to make friends and save his city. It’s also, at its heart, a story about an autistic kid overcoming neglect in his home. It draws on Hamish’s own childhood experiences and obsessions, making this project very close to his heart.
This is not just your ordinary superhero story. The superhero element in Go-Man is a metaphor for masking, the camouflaging behavior that many autistic people employ to suppress their true identity in an effort to conform with those around them. As a superhero, Tobi is more popular than ever! But this masking effort drains him of all of his energy, making him retreat into his bedroom for days.
Tobi’s goal is to become someone who doesn’t need his superhero side anymore. He must ultimately learn to love himself as he is, find friends who appreciate him for himself, and finally enjoy being just a kid before it’s too late.

Many of these I am looking forward to reading. The most attractive of the bunch is CANDLE ISLAND. Realistic middle-grade fiction is my favorite genre AND I’m privileged to live in Maine several months each year.
Thanks so much for sharing these with your readers.
AND I’ve read and enjoyed Lauren Wolk for several years.
