Cindy Crushes Programming: Pokemon Inspired Planters, by Teen librarian Cindy Shutts
Supplies
- Planters : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z9XG47X/ref=syn_sd_onsite_desktop_0?ie=UTF8&pd_rd_plhdr=t&aref=TbFAvCAwHR&th=1
- Soil made for succulents
- Succulents: A coworker donated clippings from succulents that patrons would need to propagate before they can be planted
- Paint and Brushes
Steps
- To find images of Pokemon that the teens could glue on their planter or use as references, I went to Pinterest. https://img1.etsystatic.com/065/0/10845602/il_570xN.785921817_rdck.jpg
- I tried to give the teens simple Pokemon designs that would be easy to complete in the time given. I used the first generation pokemon since they are the most well known.
- Have them cut out the eyes and other markings to trace on the pot. Some of the teens (and myself) just cut the eyes out and pasted them on the pot. This is easier, and a good option to have available. It depends on their artistic skills and preference of the participant.
- Paint the planter make sure to have the eyes marked off so you do not paint the Pokemon’s body color where the whites of the eyes will be.
- Let Dry. If you do the gluing then just paint and glue after. It did take a couple of coats of paint to look nice.
- Add soil
- Add succulent clippings
- I had a little information available for patrons to take home about how to care for the succulent.
Final Thoughts: This program was for adults and teens, so it was nice to see parents and kids. Everyone was happy and it was full.
Editor’s Note: Though this particular program was Pokemon inspired in theme, you could do this with any fandom.
