Cindy Crushes Programming: Conservation Programming Based on The Real World of Endangered Pokemon, by Teen Librarian Cindy Shutts
Our summer read theme is the Iread theme “Read, Renew, Repeat.” I had trouble coming up with theme programs that were exciting, but then I thought “wait a minute. Pokemon is all about conservation and animals!” So I came up with an idea to do a program all about Pokemon, but focus on it being educational.
- I created a powerpoint where I had the kids guess what animals different pokemon were based on. I used this article to help me build my powerpoint. Iused this as my first slide https://www.slideegg.com/pokemon-powerpoint-slide-55703. I also added information about Pikachu.
- Pikachu had been thought to be a mouse Pokemon but not the original design of Pikachu has revealed that it was based on a squirrel
- I then did a more traditional game of who’s that pokemon? I used a pokemon Slideshow I had found. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.scoutsni.org/wp-content/uploads/Explorers-Pokemon-Quiz-wecompress.com_.pptx&ved=2ahUKEwjFguWj–WGAxXclIkEHWo1ArgQFnoECBMQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2qscV9UAWsRBZZnQth04CZ
- I also gave the kids stickers as prizes for correct guesses. In the end, everyone got stickers so no one was left out.
- I then had the kids do trivia I had found via https://www.bearbudgetcrafts.com/_files/ugd/3278e3_e8f7579ed92347fabcab358792a58521.pdf This was fun for them. I let them work together and they loved it.
- I had a pokemon scavenger hunt last. I hid pokemon cards in the children’s department and they got to keep the ones they found. I should have told them they could only have one of each card. I did have to have a kid return some of the cards.
Overall, I really enjoyed this program. I used a lot of resources that I had found online. I would do this program again. The parents who came with their kids loved it. Everyone was happy.
