Teen Reactions to the Mockingjay Part 1 Teasers

August 13, 2014 by Karen Jensen, MLS   Leave a Comment

I don’t know about you, but I (and my teens) are completely buzzed about The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One being released November 21. My copies of the books and Playaways don’t sit long enough to be SHELVED before someone starts looking for them again, and my teens are in HUGE debates over where they’re going to split the movie. And this was before the teaser trailers. Wait, what teasers you ask? THESE!!!

My teens’ first reaction to to “Together as One” trailer was “HOW DID PEETA LIVE?!?!” so then we had to have a huge discussion about how in the movie they briefly mentioned that he was taken by Capitol forces, and the Resistance had to get Katniss, because she was their priority (“I still don’t see why they couldn’t get both of them. That’s messed up, Miss.” Then came the huge discussion about why he’s standing next to Snow, and oh man, do they have theories.

Then the second one came out….

When I showed them “Unity” that made the discussions more heated. “HOW DID SHE SURVIVE?!?!” “SHE WAS DEAD?” “Why is she just standing there?!?!?!” And then when Beetee broke into the transmission, they actually cheered in my office. I’ve shared pictures here and on twitter so you know how small it is- I had 8 teens around my screen watching it. And then another 8. And then another group.

I wouldn’t say that they are as excited for this as they are for Guardians of the Galaxy, but that’s only because they know that this is the first part, and there’s a second one which will have the conclusion. They are definitely worn out of book-based movies being chunked into quartets when the books are only trilogies, and not getting the entire story in one movie as they do in one book. I can’t say that I blame them- even when we find the cheap theater, to watch the entire Hunger Games series is close to $30 per person. The ones that are actually in town, where teens don’t need heavy begging to get to cost between $12-15 per ticket, which can be pretty steep when a. you can’t get a job or b. a lot of your paycheck goes to help your family.

What do you think of the trailers? Are you going to see The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One? Why or why not? Share in the comments!
