Who Knows? A guest post by Kristen Williams

Book Character Artwork & GIVEAWAY by Kristen

I am new in my love and adoration for the Doctor. It’s only been within this last year that I have fully immersed myself in the show and really gotten to understand why so many people close to me love it so thoroughly.

The first episode I saw was Blink, which my father insisted that I watch because he said it was “the best show he’d ever seen.” Big words to live up to so I settled in and prepared to be wowed. And I was. It was really an amazing episode. Time passed, years really before I ever tuned in again.

I decided that I would start at the beginning of the new Doctor Who episodes (I have yet to see any before the 9th Doctor) and watch them all in order.

I’ve now watched the 9th, 10th and 11thDoctor. Each I loved but the 10th Doctor resonated with me the most. From what I’ve seen from the fan base it seems that one Doctor ends up being ‘your’ Doctor and really who knows why?

I have pondered this question and really tried to figure out why David Tennant as the 10th Doctor affects me so much. Is it his romance with Rose? Is it his happy façade masking that deeper, sad alien under the guise of a human?

The best way to really think of it is to remember the episodes that gripped me. Of course, Blink is famous for the Weeping Angels which were mesmerizing and terrifying. But honestly the part that really got to me the most was the Doctor’s description of what time travel is:

“People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a big bowl of wibbly wobbly timey wimey… stuff.” And really, that is about as far as my brain can get into time travel. This has to be the most accurate and user friendly description.

Then we have the Doctor in the Water of Mars. This episode terrified me but really I think it showed so much depth and pain in the Doctor. You really see behind the fun-loving, bold Doctor into someone that feels chained and trapped in their world. This is the only episode I can think of where the Doctor adamantly refuses to let the rules of the Time Lords rule him.

I could go through episode by episode, season by season but never get to the real answer as to why is seems each fan seems to connect to one Doctor the deepest. Overall I guess it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that people connect to a show and it allows us, as fans, to journey to new places and ponder things we might not think about otherwise.
