Things I Didn’t Learn in Library School: Thoughts from a second year school librarian (guest post by Rachel Kammerer)
I sent an email to Karen Jensen thanking her for this site. I get so many great ideas and book reviews that I just wanted to let her know that I was reading (and thankful). She responded to me and asked if I’d write a post explaining what I didn’t learn in library school or how the reality meets up with my expectations. ACK! The pressure began. I read this site daily. What can I, a second year librarian, offer to the readers?

Rachel,
Nearly exact to my experiences. And I am starting my FIFTH year, like you, following a retired librarian. My “to-do-later” pile is higher, my “big ideas” list is longer, my interruptions are more frequent, and the learning goes on. The hardest thing for me, at this point, is coming to grips with people, including co-workers, who will never quite understand what we do. Beyond that, it's a great job.
I love this series! I am a first year and the things I'm learning so far (two weeks into the school year) go so far beyond what I learned in school. I spent two years working as a library assistant in an elementary school– co-teaching and learning the ends and outs of an open access library. Now, I'm a librarian at an elementary school where I see kids every six days during specials rotation. I'm lucky to have a half time para! I am also excited when I can accomplish just one thing on my list of things to do! And book repair?? If I can't fix it with tape in under 1 min, it gets put in a box to be looked at later.. whenever later is! …Yet despite all of this… I love my job!
