Take a step back in time with guest blogger Jennifer McGowan (Historical ya fiction spotlight)
Why in the World write YA Historicals?
Instead, not only did I choose to write YA Historical… but I wrote it about a group of fictional girls in Elizabethan England—a time period not exceptionally well known by most teen readers. And although I was not entirely sure how my stories of Elizabethan spies would fare, I was thrilled when Simon & Schuster picked up the first two books in the series, starting with MAID OF SECRETS (debuting May 7, 2013).

Thanks for this post and I just popped over to Cosets and Cutlasses and love their new blog! I'm a huge fan of historical- both writing and reading it and I'm glad to add books to my TBR.

I'm loving The Diviners by Libba Bray, as the 1920s is one of the eras I'm most interested in. Will be looking into these new titles!

Corsets and Cutlasses looks fab, agreed! 1920's is my favourite period at the moment, with stand-outs being Debutantes by Cora Harrison (UK setting) and the Flappers series by Jillian Larkin (US setting), although I enjoyed the Diviners as well.
For other settings, two of the best books I've read this year are Code Name Verity (World War II) and A Reckless Magick (Regency England but with magic) – both are stunning!
